Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates only know the agents by their codenames — one-word labels such as "disease", "Germany" and "carrot." Yes, carrot. It’s a legitimate codename. Each spymaster wants their team to identify their agents first... without accidentally exposing the assassin.
In Codenames two teams compete to be the first to make contact with all their agents. Lay out 25 cards, each with one word. The spymasters look at a key card showing the identity of each card and then take turns giving clues to their teammates. A clue consists of a single word and a number, where the number suggests how many cards in play have some association with the clue word. Teammates then identify one agent they think is on their team; if they are correct, they may continue guessing up to one more than the indicated number; if the agent belongs to the other team or is an innocent bystander, the team's turn ends; and if they pick the assassin, they lose the game.
Spymasters keep giving clues until a team has identified all their agents or the assassin has removed one team from the game.
