In Lost Cities: Roll & Write you want to start your expeditions on the six coloured tracks with the smallest possible dice values. Each turn decide whether to continue an expedition or start a new one. Boost spaces and artifacts offer ways to advance quickly, but you will need to consider carefully which tracks to follow on which roll. If you make good progress, victory awaits — but if an expedition stalls, you can lose points as fast as you earned them!
More specifically, each player has their own score sheet, which has eight columns: six coloured columns that correspond to the colours of Lost Cities (red/orange/yellow/green/blue/purple), an artifact column and a die column. You fill in or mark all of these columns from bottom to top.
As the active player you roll six dice on your turn — three six-sided colour dice and three ten-sided dice numbered 0–9 — then choose one number column and one colour column and mark that number in that colour column on your sheet. If you choose 0 and you have not started that colour column, you may mark the "colon" circle at the bottom of the column. If you choose a non-0 number and you have not started that column, write the number in the bottom space of the column; if you have started that column, you may only add another number to that column if it is the same value or higher. (A 0 is written in a column as 10.) Other players choose from the two remaining dice a number column and a colour column and then mark one of their columns in a similar way.
If you write a number on an arrow in a column, you can “accelerate” any colour column by filling the lowest empty space with the same number that is currently at the top of that column. If you write over another arrow, you accelerate again! If you write a number on an artifact space, you mark a space in the artifact column. If you have filled all nine spaces in a column and can write a number there again, you mark off an artifact instead.
If you wish, you may refuse to choose a number-colour combination. If you do, mark a die in the die column.
If you write a number in the seventh box of a color column or the seventh box in the artifact or die column — check it off and you are the first player to do so — then you score a "bridge bonus" of 20 points because you are the first player to cross that bridge.
If you mark off the ninth space in the die column you are considered “exhausted”, but you continue to play. The game ends after the turn in which all players are exhausted or after all eight bridges have been crossed. Players then score points for each color column based on the number of spaces they have filled, and that score is doubled — both positive and negative — if they have marked the “double-point” circle at the bottom of the column. Players also score points for the number of spaces marked in the artifact and dice columns, but if you are exhausted you score 0 points for that column. Add your bridge bonus points to the sum of these eight columns, and the player with the highest score wins.
